What is the relationship between BEI Resources and ATCC? 

Answer: NIAID awarded a contract for establishing a biodefense repository to ATCC in September 2003.

If I'm already registered with another NIH repository or for select agents, do I need to complete a full registration with BEI Resources?  

Answer: Yes. The registration processes for different NIH programs are separate. However, you may be able to use some of the same documents for BEI Resources registration as you did for other applications, such as your CV and Scope of Use.

Who establishes the requirements for access to BEI Resources materials?  

Answer: Policies and practices mandated for use of BEI Resources are set by NIAID and not by ATCC.

Is registration for the facility or for individual researchers? 

Answer: BEI Resources does accept Institutional registrations for multiple researchers at the same institution.  Institutional registration packets can be found on the registration detail pages.  An institutional MTA must be signed by a signatory capable of legally binding the institution.  All registrants must also submit paperwork applicable for their registration level as outlined in the instructions.

Will researchers at the new biodefense laboratories funded by NIAID have to register with BEI Resources? 

Answer: Yes, they must meet all requirements for access to BEI Resources materials.

Do you need to be funded by NIH to obtain BEI Resources materials? 

Answer: No, eligible recipients do not need to be funded by NIH.

How can I facilitate the acceptance of my permit when received by BEI? 

Answer: When applying for permits and forms, please:

  • Do NOT reference BEI Resources or ATCC Catalog Numbers in the Material Description fields found on the permits and/or forms.
  • Make sure your name and address on the permit applications and/or forms are exactly as they appear on your BEI Resources registration.

What are the requirements to access select agents in BEI Resources? 

Answer: 

Researchers must work at established U.S. institutions with appropriate facilities and safety programs and must have a legitimate need for these agents. Requestors must verify their select agent registration with CDC and/or USDA. Registration with BEI Resources must be approved by NIAID.  Click here for more information.

Who decides which reagents will be distributed by BEI Resources? 

Answer: 

The reagents provided by BEI Resources are received and prepared in response to the needs of the scientific community. BEI Resources actively solicits recommendations from researchers for materials to acquire and/or produce.

How long will it take for me to receive my request? 

Answer: The answer is variable. Once your request has been placed and you have applied for, received, and sent all the necessary permits and forms, your order should arrive within 7 business days of the processing date. Requests of quantities over 5 or those involving select agents may have longer processing times. Please contact BEI Resources at 1-800-359-7370 or e-mail us if you have any questions regarding the status of your request.

What is your capability for developing reagents? 

Answer: BEI Resources has BSL-2 and BSL-3 laboratories. We are acquiring biological materials from the research community, existing domestic and international collections, field collections, and clinical isolates. Materials will be produced by contract when needed.

Can you acquire materials internationally? 

Answer: In some cases, yes. ATCC's experience with regulations can facilitate the importation of biological materials.

Can BEI Resources export materials? 

Answer: BEI Resources will export materials only when directed by NIAID.

Does BEI Resources have a process to protect the intellectual property (IP) of depositors? 

Answer: Yes. Each registrant must sign a general material transfer agreement as part of the registration process, and recipients must sign a letter of transfer for each shipment. These documents address IP issues for the materials.
