Quantity limit per year for this item is 800 Adult flies. Orders over this limit will be sent to NIAID for approval before shipment. Please allow up to 6 months after order for Adult flies to be available. Adult flies must be picked up from the WRAIR facility in Rockville, Maryland, USA. They cannot be shipped.

Lutzomyia longipalpis (L. longipalpis), strain LLJB was obtained in Jacobina, Brazil.

This vector is transmission competent for Leishmania spp., including Leishmania infantum chagasi.

The whole genome sequence of a representative L. longipalpis colony is available (GenBank: AJWK00000000).

NR-44015 consists of adult L. longipalpis (sand flies). Note: L. longipalpis, strain Jacobina, Brazil (LLJB) can also be obtained in mixed L3/pupae life stages (NR-44001).

Any scientist* who is registered at the appropriate level with BEI Resources may request materials provided by the Department of Defense Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR) Sand Fly Initiative through the BEI Resources online catalog. BEI Resources forwards the request to NIAID for approval. Upon NIAID approval and issuance of permits, reagents will be shipped to the requestor directly from the WRAIR insectary. Sand Flies are not manufactured by or stored at BEI Resources. For technical questions about WRAIR materials, contact the WRAIR office directly.

*Scientists working for DoD agencies must order directly from the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research and not through BEI Resources.

  • Customers located in the state of Hawaii will need to contact the Hawaii Department of Agriculture to determine if an Import Permit is required. A copy of the permit or documentation that a permit is not required must be sent to ATCC in advance of shipment.
  • USDA APHIS VS 16-6 or 16-6A permit must be obtained and a copy of the permit must be sent to ATCC in advance of shipment. The Application Form VS 16-3 (Import controlled material import or transport organisms or vectors) must be submitted to USDA APHIS Veterinary Services to obtain the VS 16-6 or 16-6A permit.
