This is a low (L) yield HA mutant of A/New Jersey/11/1976 (H1N1) virus that was isolated from the 1976 epidemic at Ft. Dix, New Jersey.

The L and H mutants of the A/New Jersey/11/7196 (H1N1) Ft. Dix epidemic virus are the progenitors of the X-53 and X-53a reassortants used for vaccination in 1976. Their phenotypes are distinguishable on the basis of serological reactivity, different plaque size in MDCK cells and high versus low yields in chick embryos.
