Additional Information:
HSV-1, KOS is a laboratory-adapted strain that was originally isolated from a lip lesion of a human in 1964 and has been used as starting material for a variety of HSV-1 mutant strains.4 The complete genome of HSV-1, KOS has been sequenced (GenBank: JQ673480 and KT899744).
Herpes simplex virus 1 and 2 cause frequent human infections, with worldwide prevalence reported at 67% and 13%, respectively.5 They belong to the family Orthoherpesviridae. It is a large enveloped double stranded DNA (approximately 152000 base pairs) virus, with an icosahedral capsid and tegument layer.5
