Additional Information:

Measles viruses (MeV) are single-stranded negative-sense non-segmented RNA viruses.2 MeVs are divided into 8 clades, designated A through H, further divided into 24 genotypes based on the sequence of the 450 nucleotides encoding for the carboxyl-terminal 150 amino acids of the nucleoprotein (N-450).2,3 In 2018, four new genotypes were identified: B3, D4, D8 and H1.
In 2000, measles was declared eliminated in the United States by the World Health Organization (WHO), but there have since been periodic outbreaks, with 2019 and 2025 having the highest numbers of cases and outbreaks reported.4,5 A multistate measles outbreak, predominantly affecting members of close-knit communities with low measles vaccination coverage, began in January 2025, and as of October 2025, a total of almost 1600 cases have been reported in the United States.4 Among the cases from which specimens were available for molecular sequencing, all were confirmed as wild-type virus, with genotype D8 being the most predominant and genotype B3 being less common.1,4
